About Breakthrough Manchester

Breakthrough Manchester’s mission is to launch promising Manchester middle school students, particularly those who are from traditionally underserved communities, on the path to college while inspiring the next generation of high school and college leaders and educators. Not only does Breakthrough focus on preparing our students and teachers for success through teaching and learning, but also developing social, advocacy, communication, and leadership skills. Breakthrough recruits upper level high school and college students from throughout the country to teach in our summer program. These Teaching Fellows are guided by professional educators who serve as Dean of Faculty, Dean of Students and Instructional Coaches. 

Job Description

We are currently recruiting an Instructional Coach for Math

Instructional Coaches are responsible for supporting Teaching Fellows in maintaining an academically rigorous, safe, and productive learning environment for all students and teachers during our summer program. They serve as consultants in curriculum and classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures. They are present on campus Monday through Thursday, 8:30-2:00, to support Teaching Fellows through observations and daily department meetings.

Breakthrough will engage 4 Instructional Coaches, one in each core academic area: Math, Science, Literature and Writing. The primary responsibility is to support six Teaching Fellows with curriculum development and implementation, ensuring that content and academic skills are high quality, presented meaningfully and are appropriately rigorous for Breakthrough students. They will observe classes and provide verbal and written feedback on both teaching and classroom management techniques.

For your work as Math Instructional Coach, you will receive a stipend of $4500. Additionally, you may be eligible to receive professional development CEUs that you can use toward maintaining your state teacher certification. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Commit to learning, understanding, and implementing Breakthrough Instructional Trainings (BIT)
  • Recommend teaching techniques reinforced with specific readings from Teach Like a Champion to improve confidence and competence as needed 
  • Lead daily department meetings with the express goal of increasing Teaching Fellow expertise in using, modifying and presenting curriculum
  • Ensure consistency and quality of coaching experience for all Teaching Fellows by seeing that they are observed regularly and given Observation Feedback Sheets twice a week; and that Teacher Excellence Rubrics are completed twice per summer with a full class observation
  • Based on observations, recommend review workshops to Dean of Faculty
  • Present Professional Development to all Teaching Fellows at at least one  Faculty Meeting 
  • Write a final performance evaluation for each Teaching Fellow
  • Proofread and edit final student evaluations written by Teaching Fellows
  • Engage fully in the Breakthrough community, sharing our passion for teaching, learning, and leading

 Instructional Coaches receive a stipend of $4,500. Additionally, coaches may be eligible to receive professional development CEUs to apply toward maintaining your state teacher certification.

Summer of 2024 Draft Schedule

Professional Staff Orientation: Tuesday, June 4, 4-7pm 

Teaching Fellow Orientation: June 10 – 21 (No Juneteenth)

  • ICs join at 4:00 on Wednesday 12th for introductions and dinner in departments
  • ICs join by 4:00 Thursday 13th -Thursday 20th (except Juneteenth) for department meetings focused on first week of classes
  • ICs join for Friday run-through on morning of 23rd; exact time TBD

Program Dates: June 24 – August 2 

  • Mondays-Thursdays 8:30-2:00 pm  (holiday on July 4)
  • Except Parent Conference Night Wednesday, July 10, 2-8pm 

Celebration: Saturday, August 3, 5-8pm

Wrap-Up Week: Monday-Thursday, August 5 – 8 

  • Monday-Thursday 8:00-3:00
