After completing Breakthrough’s rigorous selection and training process, then having real-world, relevant experience, our Teaching Fellows are well prepared for their next career step, including these selective pipeline partner programs.
ACHIEVEMENT FIRST
Achievement First is a growing network of non-profit, college-preparatory, K-12 urban public charter schools in Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island. AF schools are focused on providing scholars with the academic and character skills they need to graduate from top colleges and to serve as the next generation of leaders in our communities. Teachers participate in the Achievement First Teacher Career Pathway, a systematic, coordinated approach to recognizing and developing great teachers as they progress through five career stages.
ALDER GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Alder GSE partners with mission-aligned TK-12 school communities across California to offer a teacher residency model that combines immersive hands-on practice in the classroom with educational theory and research. Residents earn a Master’s Degree in Education and Teaching Credential in one year. Residents apprentice four days a week with a mentor teacher, learn within a cohort of peers, build a network of expert instructional leaders who advise and support them, engage in critical conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion, and receive priority consideration for a full-time position upon completing the program. Alder GSE’s mission is to create opportunity and cultivate success for every student by recruiting and educating excellent teachers and leaders who reflect our schools’ communities.
BLUE ENGINE
Blue Engine partners with public high schools serving low-income communities to increase academic rigor and prepare dramatically greater numbers of students for postsecondary success. To ensure students build strong academic foundations in high school, Blue Engine recruits, trains and supports Blue Engine Teaching Assistants (BETAs), recent college graduates who collaborate with teachers to help students develop advanced skills in mathematics, literacy and social cognition before they set foot on campus. BETAs commit to a single year of service, are paid an Americorps stipend (along with other financial benefits) and work in teams alongside a lead classroom teacher.
BOSTON TEACHER RESIDENCY
Boston Teacher Residency (BTR) is a master’s program in education that recruits talented college graduates, career changers and community members and gives them the tools they need to make an immediate impact in the classrooms of the Boston Public Schools (BPS). Teacher Residents spend the full academic year in a BPS classroom, teaching alongside an experienced mentor and applying theory to practice through rigorous coursework. Their commitment earns them a master’s degree in education from UMass Boston, a Massachusetts Initial Teacher License and credit toward a dual license in Special Education.
BROWN MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING (MAT) PROGRAM
The Brown Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program is an intensive one year master’s and certification program that prepares tomorrow’s teacher leaders for careers in elementary education (grades 1-6) or secondary education (grades 7-12) English, history/social studies, or science (biology, chemistry or engineering/physics). With a passionate commitment to equity and social justice, MAT candidates become content experts who create innovative and rigorous learning experiences for youth.
CAPITAL TEACHING RESIDENCY
The Capital Teaching Residency (CTR) is a nationally recognized, highly selective teacher training program that provides a pathway for aspiring teachers to develop into outstanding educators prepared to serve in high-need schools in Washington, D.C. The mission of the Capital Teaching Residency (CTR) is to close the achievement gap by increasing the number of highly effective educators in the District of Columbia.
CITY YEAR
City Year is an American education nonprofit organization founded in 1988. The organization partners with public schools in 29 high-need communities across the US and through international affiliates in the UK and Johannesburg, South Africa. City Year AmeriCorps members serve as student success coaches, supporting the development, growth, and success of students in systemically under-resourced schools, while cultivating skills to be leaders in their communities and careers.

DENVER FELLOWS
The Denver Fellows Program is a district-wide math and literacy tutoring initiative in Denver Public Schools. It is an opportunity to be part of a unique and transformative initiative in one of the fastest-growing urban school districts in the nation. The mission of the Denver Fellows program is to close the opportunity by providing small group math and literacy instruction for our highest need students in order to accelerate their academic growth in preparation for college and career. DENVER SCHOOLS OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
The Denver Schools of Science and Technology (DSST) is a high-performing network of charter schools serving students in grades 6-12 in the Denver area. DSST’s middle and high schools have consistently been ranked among the best in Denver Public Schools. KIPP PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Knowledge is Power Program, commonly known as KIPP, is a network of free open-enrollment college-preparatory schools in low income communities throughout the United States. MASTERY CHARTER SCHOOLS
Mastery Charter Schools is a growing network of high-performing charter schools based in Philadelphia. Their mission is to ensure that all students learn the academic and personal skills they need to succeed in higher education, to compete in the global economy, and to pursue their dreams. They believe that educational inequity is the most pressing social problem facing our country—the civil rights issue of our day. They seek passionate, mission-aligned teachers and leaders who are prepared to join in our mission of ensuring that every child receives a quality, college-preparatory education. They provide a number of supports including: coaching, professional development, frequent feedback, collaborative support and best practice sharing to equip our teachers to succeed in the classroom.
MATCH TEACHER RESIDENCY
Match Education operates Match Teacher Residency, which is a two-year teacher prep program. The goal and mission of MTR is to create unusually effective rookie teachers. During the first year of the program, MTRs are in the Match Corps: Boston program and tutor and mentor four days a week in public charter schools. Twice per week, MTRs receive training and participate in a mix of graduate schools classes, simulations, and ultimately student teaching. During the second year of the program, residents are teaching full-time and receiving loads of support and coaching from MATCH. At the end of a successful second year, residents receive their Master’s in Effective Teaching.
NEW VISIONS TEACHER RESIDENCY AT HUNTER COLLEGE
The New Visions for Public Schools–Hunter College Urban Teacher Residency seeks applicants committed to educational equity and the imperative to provide all of New York City’s children with an excellent education. Teaching is a challenging and complex profession that requires working collaboratively with colleagues while engaging in reflection for continual self-improvement. It actively seeks mid-career professionals looking to enter the field of education.

SHADY HILL SCHOOL TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM
Shady Hill’s nationally known Teacher Training Center (TTC) is a graduate-level teacher preparation program that provides aspiring teachers with well-guided experiences in pre-K through eighth-grade classrooms. In this one-year, site-based program, apprentice teachers discover what teaching is all about through observation, supervised teaching, workshops, seminars, and continuous involvement in the life of the school. Some participants choose to enroll solely in the TTC, though most also participate in a partnering master’s program at Lesley University or Boston University.

Teach For America’s mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting our nation’s most promising leaders in the effort. TFA recruits outstanding recent college graduates and professionals from all backgrounds and career interests to commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools. UNCOMMON SCHOOLS
Our mission is to start and manage outstanding urban charter public schools that close the achievement gap and prepare low-income students to graduate from college. Uncommon Schools currently operates 49 schools across New York (Brooklyn, Troy, and Rochester), New Jersey (Camden and Newark), and Massachusetts (Boston) that have been nationally recognized for its’ proven record of success getting low-income students to and through college! Exclusive to Uncommon Schools, North Star (Newark, NJ), the RELAY Residency is a highly selective program that offers aspiring and apprentice teachers a unique opportunity to receive high-quality teacher training, while gradually taking on more teaching responsibility. The two-year teaching residency is a partnership between Relay Graduate School of Education (Relay GSE) and select partner schools, is designed specifically for recent college graduates and career changers who are looking for an innovative pathway into the teaching profession. For all regions outside of Newark, NJ, the Apprentice Teacher role provides a unique opportunity for talented individuals with limited or no teaching experience to explore the field of education and to gain hands-on practice and the training necessary to become a successful full-time classroom teacher. By the end of the year, Apprentice Teachers will be very strong candidates for a lead teaching position.
THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO URBAN TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM
The University of Chicago Urban Teacher Education Program, UChicago UTEP, is a five-year experience open to all prospective graduate students, including recent graduates and mid-career professionals looking to become teachers. The five-year experience includes a two year Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Illinois State Certification program followed by, and, at no additional cost, three years of professional development supports for alumni as they begin their careers as instructional classroom leaders. Prospective graduate students with a bachelor’s or graduate degree in any area interested in Elementary education are eligible to apply and prospective graduate students interested in Secondary education with a bachelor’s or graduate degree in Biology or Mathematics may apply.
THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION URBAN TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM
The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education Urban Teacher Education Program prepares ethical, reflective, collaborative, and visionary teacher-leaders. The urban focus grows out of our responsibility to the communities in which we live. In the Urban Teacher Ed Program at Penn GSE, prospective teachers learn to negotiate the realities of urban contexts, bringing their content expertise and pedagogical knowledge to their teaching. Building on children’s and adolescents’ strengths, curiosities and interests, we invite prospective teachers to take an inquiry stance toward teaching and learning. Our prospective teachers leave our program inspired to use the power of teaching to deepen student learning, transform schools, and increase educational equity.
URBAN TEACHERS
Urban Teachers is a four-year, alternative teacher preparation program that operates in Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Dallas/Fort Worth. Each cohort participates in an intensive year-long residency, followed by a three-year teaching commitment in a high-need urban elementary, middle or high school. Urban Teachers residents prepare to become highly competent teachers; in addition to the clinical experience, they also enroll in a clinical Masters of Science in Education from the Johns Hopkins School of Education. All Urban Teachers are part of an unprecedented commitment to student performance: only those who can demonstrate that they can improve student learning will complete the program.

WOODROW WILSON GRADUATE SCHOOL OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
The Woodrow Wilson Graduate School of Teaching and Learning, in collaboration with MIT, seeks to transform the existing model of teacher education through a competency-based program, which shifts the current focus of education from how long candidates must be taught to what they have learned and can do. Candidates in the self-paced master’s program will experience the challenge-based curriculum—based on real problems of practice that new teachers face—in a blended environment including online, face-to-face, and clinical education. Teacher candidates complete the program when they show they’ve learned the skills and knowledge necessary to be a successful teacher or school leader on day one of their careers.
