Tutoring

Breakthrough Manchester is one of the most exciting volunteer opportunities for high school and college students in New Hampshire. As a tutor, you will receive training and support to work one-on-one (or in small groups) with students in an academic coaching model.  Through your learning, you will see your students make growth in their academic skills and celebrate their successes with them.  No previous experience is necessary – just a love of learning and interest in working with middle schoolers.  Tutoring is a flexible and rewarding option if you are looking to get a Breakthrough experience but do not have the time to commit to our more structured programs.

Breakthrough is one of the foremost opportunities for high school and college students to learn the foundational skills of teaching. As a Breakthrough teacher intern, you learn by doing; we teach you how to lead powerful lesson plans that activate learning and use effective teaching strategies to engage and motivate your students.

Who We Select

Breakthrough Manchester keeps a large team of tutors ready to serve students who may be struggling with aspects of their school experience. All applicants must be between 16 and 22 years old and currently enrolled in an accredited high school or undergraduate college program.

How We Train and Support You

As a tutor, you will participate in a multi-day, pre-service training.  In addition, weekly follow-up trainings and work-sessions support your ongoing learning and growth.  We use the best research and educational practices to give you the strategies and resources you will need to be a successful tutor. You do not need to have any prior experience teaching or taking classes in education. In fact, we encourage students who are pursuing non-teaching careers to apply.

Time Commitment

Tutoring pairings are made as needed and typically run for no more than six to eight weeks.  This gives you the flexibility to be involved seasonally or for the entire year.  During the time period you have committed to, attendance is required at all trainings and sessions; we recognize that most students have busy schedules during the year and we ask that you and your family make a good faith effort to make yourself available.  Specific dates and times are listed on the application.

Deciding to Apply

Applications are accepted each year during the months of September and again in January and March, depending upon seasonal availability (please check the application itself for specific deadlines).  If you are interested in applying to tutor at Breakthrough Manchester this year, these are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Download and read all instructions to apply.  Note that the instruction document includes information for applying to teach AND tutor.
  2. Complete the application online.
  3. You will be asked to schedule a follow-up, one-on-one, in-person interview with a Breakthrough Manchester staff member.
  4. Applicants will receive notification of their admission status shortly after their interview. We maintain a small waitpool in the instance that an accepted applicant turns down an offer or we have an increased need for tutors.

Please note that the application process is competitive and not all applicants are guaranteed admission.
