Our Students
Breakthrough Manchester seeks a diverse group of students whose opportunities could be expanded through their participation in our program. We look for students who are demonstrating their academic potential in school, and who are willing to make a long-term commitment to working with Breakthrough on the path to college.
Each spring, Breakthrough admits approximately 35 fifth grade students into its seven-year program geared toward college entrance. Fifth grade is the only entry point for students into the program, and only students attending one of the fourteen Manchester public elementary schools are eligible to apply. Demand from students in the Manchester school district alone consistently exceeds the program's capacity and results in a competitive application process.
All Breakthrough students are academically motivated, demonstrate potential for further academic success, and are committed to involvement with Breakthrough for seven years. Special consideration is given to students who will be the first in their family to earn a four-year college degree in the United States, who are eligible for federal free or reduced lunch, or who represent an ethnic minority in New Hampshire.
Breakthrough has proven positive outcomes for our students. Independent and internal assessments show that our students make statistically significant improvements in their reading, writing, and math skills. Additionally, a longitudinal study conducted by Stanford University revealed the positive effects Breakthrough has on students’ effort and involvement in school (increases in time spent on overall homework), and on their perception of school (increases in perceptions of teachers and classmates as supportive of learning, and decreases in school-related problems).
