Breakthrough Manchester

Our Partners

Breakthrough Manchester is made possible through the support and partnership with other vital communities. The success of serving our students and teachers is largely due to our relationships with The Derryfield School, the City of Manchester, and Breakthrough Collaborative.

The Derryfield School
Derryfield has been Breakthrough’s most important partner since 1991, when the program was founded.  As a program of The Derryfield School, Breakthrough makes its home at the school’s campus and falls under the 501(c)3 non-profit status of the school.  Derryfield provides governance for the program, as well as administrative and professional support.  Nearly a quarter of all Derryfield students are involved with Breakthrough at some point, either as a student, teacher, tutor, or volunteer.  Additionally, numerous Derryfield teachers have mentored and trained Breakthrough teachers over the years.  The key relationship between Breakthrough and The Derryfield School ensures that both the program and the school remain strong voices of advocacy for education in the Manchester community.

The City of Manchester
Because Breakthrough students represent every elementary, middle, and high school in Manchester, Breakthrough’s strong relationships and communication with the schools and the district is vital in the work of supporting students on the path to college. Manchester community agencies, businesses, service clubs and community leaders also participate in Breakthrough by lending financial support, communicating the mission to the larger population, referring students and teachers, and offering expertise and guidance in supporting Manchester's children.

Breakthrough Collaborative
Breakthrough Collaborative connects Breakthrough Manchester with a greater variety of summer teaching applicants from around the country, and provides resources and materials for further development of curriculum and outreach.  Created in 1991, the Breakthrough Collaborative promotes and supports the growth of programs in 27 urban communities across the nation and in Hong Kong.

Annually, 700 high school and college-age teachers work with 2,300 middle school students at all of the Breakthrough sites. Celebrating the power of a rigorous academic program, the delight found in creativity, diversity and intellectual enthusiasm, thousands of young people come together to teach, learn, share, and grow in the spirit of Breakthrough.

Ken leads Sanela, Rejoice, and Fenwick cleaning up Valley Cemetery on our annual Workathon, Day of Service. Students visit multiple sites around Manchester to give back to the community that supports them in their educational journey. Other recent recipients of community service efforts have been Common Grounds Garden, VNA Child Care Center, New Horizons Food Pantry, and numerous local nursing homes.
